Cancún, Quintana Roo — The Guelaguetza festival in Cancún could become a permanent fixture on the city’s cultural calendar after a record-breaking 2026 edition drew more than 30,000 people over three days.
The Association of Oaxacans has submitted a proposal to institutionalize the event, aiming to ensure its continuity regardless of future municipal administration changes. The initiative will now be reviewed by the City Council, which will decide whether to make it an official celebration.
Carlos López, director of the Benito Juárez Institute of Culture and Arts, said his office will follow the legislative process but stressed that any decision must maintain equity with other cultural festivals in the municipality. He acknowledged, however, that the Guelaguetza has proven its ability to become one of Cancún’s signature events due to its attendance and cultural relevance.
This year’s edition featured nearly 70 artists on the main stage and more than 40 on alternative stages, with strong tourist participation during the traditional calenda parade, highlighting the event’s multicultural and tourism appeal.
