León, Guanajuato — The Federal Consumer Prosecutor’s Office (Profeco) has reminded businesses and consumers that tipping is completely voluntary, warning that bars, restaurants, and cafés that include a mandatory gratuity on customers’ bills could face fines of up to 3 million pesos.
The sanctions would be applied under Mexico’s Federal Consumer Protection Law, with the exact amount depending on the severity of the violation and the circumstances of each case, Profeco said.
