Mérida, Yucatán — President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo will preside over the ceremonial launch of the cargo segment of the Tren Maya project in Yucatán on Saturday, marking a pivotal step in the infrastructure initiative for southeastern Mexico. The project represents an investment exceeding 20 billion pesos.
Strategic Economic Impact
Accompanied by Yucatán Governor Joaquín Huacho Díaz Mena, Sheinbaum will also oversee progress on the expansion of the Progreso Deep-Water Port during her working tour. This marks her third visit to the state within the first six months of her administration.
The cargo rail segment is projected to drive industrial and logistical growth, create thousands of jobs, attract domestic and foreign investment, and improve living standards for Yucatán residents. Governor Díaz Mena emphasized these benefits in an official statement, calling the project a "strategic economic catalyst."
Modernization of Progreso Port
A key highlight of the tour will be the inspection of the Progreso Deep-Water Port modernization, a 7.9-billion-peso project funded jointly by federal and state governments, as well as private investors. The upgrades will accommodate larger vessels, enhance logistical competitiveness, and strengthen Yucatán’s role in international maritime trade.
Cultural and Infrastructure Inaugurations
Later in the day, Sheinbaum and Díaz Mena will inaugurate the renovated Centro Cultural Ateneo Peninsular, a historic building in Mérida’s central square, alongside the new Tren Maya Museum. These initiatives underscore Yucatán’s position as a strategic hub for southeastern development and intergovernmental collaboration.
Presidential Itinerary
Sheinbaum arrived in Yucatán on Friday evening from Quintana Roo, accompanied by state officials. Her delegation stayed overnight in Mérida after arriving at the Tren Maya station in Teya.
This marks her third working visit to Yucatán since taking office. Her first trip, on October 20 of the previous year, included the signing of the IMSS Bienestar Federalization Agreement and the Universal Disability Pension Agreement in Progreso. The second visit, on December 13, involved awarding 117 professional degrees to graduates of the Benito Juárez Universities in Valladolid.
The cargo rail project is part of the broader Tren Maya initiative, which aims to transform transportation and economic connectivity across Mexico’s southeastern region.
