Felipe Carrillo Puerto, Quintana Roo — Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum resumed her agenda in the Maya region on Friday with the launch of the “Health House by House” program in Felipe Carrillo Puerto, accompanied by a heavy security presence.
Arrival and Security Measures
President Sheinbaum arrived in the afternoon of June 20 to oversee the construction progress of the Felipe Carrillo Puerto General Hospital and lead a national health meeting focused on the IMSS Bienestar model. Her visit followed a last-minute adjustment to her schedule due to her earlier presence in Oaxaca and Guerrero, areas affected by Hurricane Erick.
The president traveled in a white Suburban, accompanied by Quintana Roo Governor Mara Lezama and federal health officials. Security was heightened, with personnel from the National Defense Secretariat, the National Guard, and the Presidential Military Staff conducting patrols and monitoring access points. Civilian-clad officers were also deployed to secure the event perimeter.
Health Initiatives and Closed-Door Meeting
The meeting, held at the hospital construction site, addressed the implementation of the “Health House by House” initiative, which aims to provide medical care to vulnerable populations. The session was closed to the press and concluded at approximately 9:15 PM local time. Sheinbaum departed shortly afterward, reportedly en route to Valladolid, Yucatán, with unconfirmed plans for a stop in Tihosuco.
Peaceful Protest by Teachers
Outside the hospital, members of the National Coordinator of Education Workers (CNTE) staged a peaceful demonstration, demanding reforms to the ISSSTE Law of 2007. Their signs read: “CNTE QRoo: Abrogation of the ISSSTE Law 2007.”
Background and Logistics
The event was initially canceled due to Sheinbaum’s visit to hurricane-affected zones but was later reinstated. A large tent previously set up for the gathering was dismantled and relocated upon confirmation of her arrival. The president landed at Tulum International Airport before traveling by road to Felipe Carrillo Puerto.
Sheinbaum is expected to continue her tour in Mérida on Saturday.
