Playa del Carmen, Quintana Roo — Medical clinics in this popular tourist destination have suspended prenatal care for pregnant women, leaving dozens of patients without access to essential services and raising concerns about healthcare quality following recent municipal staff cuts.
The Villas del Sol clinic in Playa del Carmen has stopped providing prenatal check-ups and now only treats patients with flu-like symptoms. The suspension comes after the municipal government dismissed more than 100 medical service workers, leaving residents worried they will be treated by medical interns and nursing students who now staff the facilities.
“There are many sick people,” said resident Melquiades López Sánchez. “More than 50 people arrived starting at 7 a.m. but had to leave when they found the clinic closed. They didn’t start seeing patients until 8 a.m., and there’s only one doctor. The rest are interns and nursing students who are barely coordinated to care for the population.”
Pregnant women are being referred to the General Hospital for prenatal care, creating additional burdens for families already struggling with transportation costs.
“This is worrying because getting there means extra expenses, and the economy isn’t favorable for bus fares,” said Graciela González García, another resident affected by the changes.
Two other clinics in the Luis Donaldo Colosio Murrieta and 28 de Julio neighborhoods remain closed despite municipal authorities claiming they were being renovated to offer better services. With no reopening date announced, residents needing medical attention are turning to private providers.
“Illnesses don’t wait, and we can’t wait until our situation becomes more complicated,” said Alejandro Martínez Campos, expressing frustration shared by many in the community.
