Power Outage in Chetumal Forces Closure of Quintana Roo Labor Courts

Closed entrance of the Labor Courts in Cancún, Quintana Roo, with a suspension decree posted on the door after a power outage damaged computer systems

Cancún, Quintana Roo — A power outage in Chetumal damaged the computer equipment of Quintana Roo’s labor courts, forcing the closure of the facilities in both the state capital and Cancún and disrupting hearings for dozens of people.

The temporary closure began on Tuesday, October 6, and will extend through Monday, which is a public holiday, so the courts are not expected to reopen until Tuesday. Only then will litigants with cases before the court learn the new dates for their hearings.

At the Labor Courts in Cancún, located on Avenida Nichupté, there is no public service. Only the decree announcing the suspension of activities is posted on the door as a notice.

“Due to the interruption of the electricity supply at the facilities of the State Judicial Branch, damages were caused that put out of operation and compromised the proper functioning of computer systems, telecommunications and other services essential to guarantee the regular and continuous provision of the public service of imparting and administering justice,” the decree reads.

The courts have been carrying a backlog of case files since the beginning of the year because of the workload of judges, a situation made worse by the forced pause.
