Poverty Fell 38% in Quintana Roo, Governor Mara Lezama Says

Quintana Roo Governor Mara Lezama speaks during an event where she presented figures on poverty reduction in the state

Quintana Roo — Poverty in Quintana Roo has fallen 38% during the current state administration, Governor Mara Lezama said in a message marking the Oct. 17 observance dedicated to the fight against poverty, presenting figures she described as evidence of steady improvement in the living conditions of the state’s families.

“Behind every figure there are families living better,” Lezama said as she announced the data.

The governor attributed the results to what she called historic investment in social programs and a spending policy designed to return public resources directly to residents.

“This is possible thanks to the historic investment in social programs and the transparent, efficient and responsible management of the people’s money, which must always return to the people,” she said. “Because behind every figure there are families living better — girls and boys, young people with opportunities, and women moving toward a more dignified life.”

Lezama added: “Governing means transforming lives, and in this new way of governing the commitment is clear: that wellbeing reaches every home, because prosperity must always be shared and rights must be guaranteed, so that no one is left behind and no one is left out.”

The state figures were presented alongside a national picture. According to the data released, 13.4 million people have left poverty in Mexico during the current federal administration, while 1.7 million people emerged from extreme poverty over the same period.

The figures were announced by the Quintana Roo state government.
