Cancún, Quintana Roo — Cancún has 82 buildings ready to serve as temporary shelters during the 2026 rainy and hurricane season, following an inspection by the Benito Juárez municipal Civil Protection Department.
The agency worked alongside education authorities and state and municipal departments to confirm the sites are ready for a weather emergency. Inspectors checked each building’s structural condition, electrical systems, internal signage, available emergency equipment, real shelter capacity and any risks the site might pose.
Pet-friendly shelter among the sites
Among the designated locations is a pet-friendly shelter in Supermanzana 247, inside the Villas Otoch subdivision, where families can stay with their animals.
In the Hotel Zone and surrounding areas, capacity is supplemented by 312 shelters run by the hotel sector, along with 40 additional self-shelter sites.
Civil Protection officials urged residents to keep storm drains clear to prevent flooding and to secure or remove objects from rooftops and patios that strong winds could pick up and turn into hazards.
