Puerto Aventuras, Quintana Roo — A visible oily film on the water of the southern marina at Puerto Aventuras has raised alarms over a potential diesel spill. The substance, floating on the surface, poses a direct threat to marine life, particularly in the nearby dolphinarium, which houses dolphins, manatees, and sea lions.
Video Evidence Circulates Online
The incident was documented in a video shared on social media by local residents, who are demanding urgent intervention from environmental authorities and civil protection agencies to contain the spread of the fuel before it reaches marine enclosures.
As of now, there has been no official statement from port authorities, and the vessel responsible for the spill has not been identified. The situation has caused concern among nautical workers, dolphinarium caretakers, and environmental activists, who fear severe consequences for both the captive marine animals and wild species in the area.
This would mark the second such incident in recent years. In November 2021, a similar spill was reported on social media by an influencer, attributed to mechanical failures in private boats.
Calls for Immediate Action
Local citizens are urging authorities to address the matter swiftly to prevent further environmental damage. The potential contamination has heightened fears of ecological harm, particularly given the delicate ecosystem of the Riviera Maya region.
No additional details regarding cleanup efforts or investigations have been released at this time.
