Cancún, Mexico — The Diocese of Cancún-Chetumal has entered a new pastoral phase following the appointment of an Apostolic Administrator, after being left in a state of sede vacante. The designation was officially confirmed by the Apostolic Nunciature through the General Secretariat of the Mexican Episcopal Conference (CEM).
What Was Officially Reported?
Through Decree Prot. N. 638/2025, issued in Rome on January 22, 2025, His Holiness Pope Leo XIV, via the Dicastery for Bishops, appointed His Excellency Monsignor Gustavo Rodríguez Vega as Apostolic Administrator of the diocese, a figure who assumes pastoral governance on a temporary basis.
The information was disseminated by the Apostolic Nunciature, the Vatican’s diplomatic authority in Mexico, and replicated by the CEM as the official channel of ecclesiastical communication.
How Will This Administration Be Exercised?
As Apostolic Administrator, Monsignor Gustavo Rodríguez Vega will have the responsibility of guaranteeing pastoral, administrative, and spiritual continuity for the diocese while the appointment of a new titular bishop is determined.
His function includes supervising the clergy, accompanying parish communities, and ensuring the ordinary functioning of the local Church.
Why Is an Apostolic Administrator Appointed?
The figure of the Apostolic Administrator is activated when a diocese is left in sede vacante, meaning without a bishop in office. This mechanism allows for maintaining institutional and pastoral stability, avoiding authority gaps while the Holy See analyzes and designates the next titular bishop.
