Cancun, Quintana Roo — Police seized approximately 100 motorcycles and temporarily detained more than 60 people during a major operation targeting illegal group rides that have been disrupting traffic and generating noise complaints in Cancun.
The Municipal Police launched the operation early Monday morning after receiving numerous complaints from residents about motorcycle caravans blocking roads late at night and in the early morning hours. Authorities intercepted a group of young riders on Avenida 135 near the intersection with Avenida Huayacan, paralyzing traffic in both directions between Avenidas 127 and Huayacan.
Police officers secured the motorcycles for violating traffic regulations. More than 60 young people were temporarily detained, though officials did not immediately announce whether they would be handed over to a judge for disturbing public order. Several young women and teenagers were released to their families.
The operation comes amid growing frustration from residents about the noise and traffic disruptions caused by these motorcycle gatherings. Members of the Red de Ciegos (Blind Network) have previously expressed anger about the excessive noise generated by these vehicle concentrations.
Authorities expect to provide further details about the operation’s results in the coming hours.
