Riviera Maya, Quintana Roo — Mexican writer Denisse Pohls has unveiled a project combining poetry, environmental conservation, and marine life education through her book La Isla Azul (The Blue Island). Originally self-published in 2018, the book sold out its first print run, with a total of 300 copies distributed.

A Creative Approach to Marine Education

The book features poems about marine animals, coloring illustrations, interactive activities such as word searches and riddles, and educational facts about ocean wildlife. Pohls, a writer specializing in children’s poetry and short stories, is also a diving guide and underwater photographer.

Now, she plans to reprint La Isla Azul to distribute free copies to children in Cozumel. Additionally, Pohls will conduct environmental education visits to 10 public schools and underserved communities on the island, using poetry and games to teach ecology. The sessions will include music, as Pohls has composed songs based on the book’s poems.

Crowdfunding Campaign Launched

To fund the reprinting of 300 new copies, Pohls has launched a GoFundMe campaign with a goal of 70,000 Mexican pesos. The funds will cover high-quality bond paper printing in letter size, ensuring durability for coloring activities. The cover and back will be in color, while the interior will remain black and white.

Pohls will personally donate 20% of the copies. The remaining books will be distributed during her school visits, where she will lead ecology workshops.

The project aims to inspire Cozumel’s youth to appreciate marine conservation through art and interactive learning.
