Playa del Carmen, Quintana Roo — Tradition, solidarity, and joy merged during a memorable evening at the “Damas en Carnaval 2026” event, held at the Grand Sunset Princess hotel under the theme “Dancing with a Cause.” All proceeds will benefit elderly residents through the Playa del Carmen DIF (Integrated Family Development) system.
The gathering brought together dozens of women committed to social causes, demonstrating that carnival celebrations can also strengthen community bonds. In her welcome address, Mayor Estefanía Mercado highlighted the collective power of women.
“When women unite, extraordinary things happen,” Mercado said. “There’s no challenge we can’t overcome, and that’s what we’re doing today by coming together for this cause of helping and supporting the DIF.”
The mayor emphasized that governing requires attention to those most in need and noted that progress should be measured not just in infrastructure but in social welfare. She acknowledged support from Governor Mara Lezama and recognized the work of Eduardo Asencio, honorary president of Playa del Carmen DIF, and his team in organizing the event.
Mercado particularly thanked Verónica Lezama, president of Quintana Roo DIF, who called the evening a genuine celebration of generosity.
“We are human beings helping other human beings,” Lezama said. “When a community comes together, great and good things happen, and you can feel that in this festive atmosphere that aims to help our elderly.”
Lezama also highlighted coordinated work between municipal and state DIF offices, noting that Quintana Roo operates as one family to support those most in need.
One of the most emotional moments was the farewell of outgoing queen Julieta Martín and the coronation of the new carnival queen, Bárbara Alpuche, who pledged to represent the cause with dedication and compassion. The evening featured entertainment by “El Fresa y la Sentencia,” who kept the dance floor lively.
Talent and creativity were on display during the dance troupe competition, where rumba, samba, and mambo filled the stage with color and energy. After deliberation by judges Tayde Rojas and Blanca López, the results were:
- First place: “Latinas de Playa” troupe
- Second place: “Mujeres Latinas”
- Third place: “Botánica” troupe
Special recognitions included:
- Best individual costume: “Arrecife” troupe
- Best individual outfit: “Habibis”
- Second place individual outfit: “Hilos de Plata”
The Damas en Carnaval 2026 event confirmed that in Playa del Carmen, culture and solidarity go hand in hand. Through music, tradition, and social commitment, the community demonstrated that celebration can also transform lives.
