Playa del Carmen to Use Fifth Avenue Ad Revenue for Infrastructure Projects

Playa del Carmen, Mexico — The municipal government will allocate advertising revenue from Fifth Avenue to infrastructure projects, Mayor Estefanía Mercado Asencio announced.

The mayor explained that the city aims to leverage these advertising spaces to generate funds for improving the appearance and functionality of the key tourist corridor.

She stated it is preferable for these revenues to benefit the community collectively rather than remaining in the hands of a few private individuals.

Mercado said the funds will be monitored by civil society and the business sector to ensure transparent use.

During an event for the “Chambamanía” program, she announced a proposal to establish a citizen oversight board to supervise the allocation of the funds. This body would include representatives from Playa del Carmen’s civil society and business community.

When questioned about confirmed measles cases, the mayor noted the patients did not have complete vaccination schedules. She said these individuals were exposed due to vaccine skepticism, which increases the risk of transmission. Mercado emphasized the importance of keeping vaccination schedules up to date to prevent avoidable diseases.

Regarding recent low temperatures, she reported that municipal field work continues in rural communities, with blankets and food supplies—many donated by the hotel sector—being distributed to support the most vulnerable families.
