Playa del Carmen, MX. – Thirty-five percent of street vendors will be removed from the first block of Playa del Carmen’s city center in the coming weeks, according to Hilario San Pedro Perea, director of Industry and Commerce for the municipality.
In an interview, the municipal official stated that operations against street vendors are currently being reinforced due to the high December tourist season.
He noted that these actions are concentrated in strategic areas of the city, including Quinta Avenida, Juárez Avenue, Constituyentes Avenue, Playa del Carmen Boulevard, and Primera Sur.
He emphasized that the objective is to reduce the presence of street vendors in these areas by up to 35 percent.
He specified that to achieve this goal, agreements have been made with some unions to relocate the vendors.
Additionally, the denial of new permits in the city’s first block has been stipulated, which has been communicated to these organizations.
He pointed out that the City Council only grants permits in specific areas outside the center, and these are for seasonal products, such as Christmas items during this month.
He added that most of these seasonal vendors are concentrated in neighborhoods like Villas del Sol and roadways like Juárez Avenue.
Finally, the official highlighted that during these operations conducted by personnel from this department, vendors without permits are urged to leave, but he added that if some persist in their attitude, they may be subject to fines ranging from 100 to 300 UMAS, or the confiscation of their products.
He indicated that currently, the municipal registry has a total of 2,500 street vendors registered throughout the city, of which approximately 600 are in the center. (Agencia SIM)
