Playa del Carmen to Host National Speed Skating Championship in March

Playa del Carmen, Quintana Roo — Playa del Carmen will host the 2026 Inter-Association Speed Skating Championship from March 25-29, cementing the city’s status as a national sports hub, Mayor Estefanía Mercado announced.

The event, which serves as a qualifier for the 2026 CONADE National Olympics and a selection event for the 2026 Santo Domingo Central American and Caribbean Games, the World Championship, and other international competitions, will take place at the recently renovated Playa del Carmen Speed Skating Track.

During a tour of the facility at the Playa del Carmen Sports Complex, Mercado said the city is ready to welcome over 1,200 athletes from 23 states across Mexico. She was accompanied by Quintana Roo Sports Commission President Jacobo Arzate, Municipal Sports Director Alberto López, coach Juan Pastor León, and multi-medalist Jeysi Sandoval.

“Thanks to the support of the Quintana Roo Sports Commission and our Governor Mara Lezama, we continue to establish Playa del Carmen as a national sports reference,” Mercado said.

“In Playa del Carmen, sports are lived, promoted, and transformed into opportunities for our youth,” she added.

Arzate noted that Playa del Carmen now has Mexico’s best speed skating track, with the facility’s modernization meeting the technical demands of the discipline and solidifying the destination as a national speed skating hub.

Quintana Roo enters the competition as the current speed skating champion in the CONADE National Olympics and recently won the National Speed Skating Championship “Copa FEMEPAR 2026” in Chiapas. The state team’s base consists primarily of athletes from Playa del Carmen.
