Playa del Carmen Advances Civil Protection with New Initiatives

Playa del Carmen, Quintana Roo — As part of the security strategy promoted by the municipal government of Mayor Estefanía Mercado, the second session of the Municipal Council of Civil Protection, Risk Prevention, and Firefighters was held to present the results of work carried out from June to November, aimed at strengthening prevention, improving response capacity, and protecting the lives, integrity, and property of Playa del Carmen families.

The session was chaired by Civil Protection Secretary Darwin Covarrubias, representing the mayor, who highlighted that as a result of the preventive and operational strategy implemented, the Operational Directorate attended to 620 citizen reports, provided 855 free ambulance services through five medical units, benefiting the population of Playa del Carmen and Puerto Aventuras.

Additionally, he explained, preventive and operational coverage was provided for 163 socio-organizational events.

During the same period, the Fire Department attended to 862 assistance services, including fires, gas leaks, animal rescues, and direct support to citizens. Furthermore, 69 preventive and community outreach actions were carried out, such as workshops in schools and community training sessions, and through the Training Program, 885 teachers, public servants, and citizens were instructed.

Additionally, 666 citizen reports were attended to, 456 false alarms were recorded, and 922 animal rescues and captures were carried out, reaffirming the Fire Department’s closeness to the community.

In terms of risk prevention and mitigation, the Technical Directorate issued 1,721 inspection orders, conducted 5,702 inspection visits to fixed establishments, performed 2,279 document reviews, and processed 8,624 file integration passes; moreover, 4,686 approvals were issued, and 50 public servants were trained, strengthening safer environments and a more resilient population.

In the area of training and professionalization, the preparation of personnel and strategic sectors of the municipality was reinforced. 171 certificates were awarded to members of the Secretariat who participated in training sessions at the National Congress of Firefighters Playa del Carmen 2025, in addition to 605 certificates to participants from different states of the Republic, consolidating Playa del Carmen as a national reference point for emergency service training.

Similarly, the approval of the Municipal Fund for Disaster Response was finalized, with an amount of 40 million pesos, 190 uniforms were delivered to Secretariat personnel, and the hiring of 27 new medical and operational positions was approved, strengthening the municipality’s financial, human, and operational capacity for emergency response.

Finally, Darwin Covarrubias acknowledged the participation of the institutions that make up the Council, whose coordinated work has been fundamental in strengthening prevention, timely response, and decision-making based on anticipation and technical information.

The permanent collaboration between departments has allowed for the consolidation of a comprehensive strategy in favor of the security and protection of Playa del Carmen families.

Special mention was made of the presence of students from the CECyTE campus, who attended this session as part of their academic training and represent a new generation committed to responsibility, social participation, and civil protection culture.
