Playa del Carmen Residents Petition for Improved Animal Control Center Funding

A petition form with signatures for the Playa del Carmen animal control center

Playa del Carmen, Quintana Roo — A group of residents has launched an online petition calling on the municipal government to allocate funding for improvements to the city’s animal control center.

The petition on Change.org, which has already gathered over 500 signatures, requests a budget to enhance the Centro de Control Animal, Asistencia y Zoonosis (Cencaaz) located at the end of the Bellavista neighborhood. Organizers are asking for expanded operational capacity and staffing, as well as extended evening hours to ensure continuous and dignified care for animals.

The proposal also recommends hiring one or two additional veterinary doctors and two more cleaning assistants to maintain facility hygiene. It calls for the refurbishment of shelter areas and professional oversight by validated animal behavior groups.

To promote adoption culture, the petition suggests a monthly schedule of adoption fairs with active participation from municipal authorities to legitimize responsible adoption processes and increase successful outcomes from the center.

“We request that this proposal be integrated into the analysis of the next budget exercise and annual operational plan, with the aim of making Cencaaz a benchmark for animal protection and public health in Playa del Carmen,” the petition states.

The petition is signed by Marlene Granados, who notes that 90% of the medical resources and special food at Cencaaz come from donations. She expressed hope that the municipal government will provide sufficient resources to improve the facility.
