Playa del Carmen, Quintana Roo — The rapid urban expansion of Playa del Carmen has exposed significant gaps in internet and phone service coverage, particularly in residential areas that continue to grow without adequate infrastructure.

Orlin Arteaga, technical manager for Megacable in Playa del Carmen, acknowledged the company is currently focused on upgrading its existing infrastructure to improve internet, phone, and television services already offered in the city.

“We’re only making renovations to the infrastructure to improve the services we already have,” Arteaga said, explaining these actions respond to growing demand driven by urban development.

Arteaga indicated that while the company works with authorities, coverage remains limited to the primary urban area covering the city center and ejido zone, leaving out high-density neighborhoods like Villas del Sol.

The situation reflects a broader challenge for telecommunications companies facing Playa del Carmen’s expansion pace, where connectivity has become an essential service for daily life, remote work, and education.

Authorities and sector companies now face the challenge of accelerating infrastructure planning and expansion to prevent urban growth from continuing to outpace internet and phone service capacity in the municipality.
