Playa del Carmen, Mexico — The pet beach at public access point 72 is slated for renovation, with municipal officials planning to add more infrastructure during this administration, as it remains one of the most preferred spots for local residents. Councilman Fernando Muñoz Calero stated that the sandy area is in high demand, prompting officials to explore alternatives for installing infrastructure near the coast.
“Yes, we are looking at alternatives for that space. The truth is it’s very good to continue with this type of infrastructure because it helps the population. It’s the best thing to do,” said Muñoz Calero.
The councilman, who heads the animal protection commission, commented that they are seeking alternatives to allocate resources to the site. The Dog Beach collective, which promotes Beach 72 for dog walking, urged officials to enable more areas for canines in neighborhoods and subdivisions to alleviate some pressure on this coastal stretch.
Sergio Beristáin Cano, founder of Dog Beach, maintained that there is a need for more spaces because this beach can no longer accommodate more dogs, with approximately 100 visiting daily. Therefore, he noted, it is necessary to also enable this type of area in the urban zone.
“It makes me very happy to see that worldwide, the mindset on animal abuse has changed a lot, and today people everywhere are seeking animal welfare, natural welfare. They are looking to care for the environment and, of course, animals, which are sentient beings that ultimately many are our pets. We all know how much we all love our pets,” said Muñoz Calero.
The previous municipal administration showed little willingness to grant space for dogs, leading to protests. This administration has tolerated the space, and events with pets have even been held at the site. For the first time in the municipality’s history, pets can access a stretch of the beach without their owners being fined.
Beristáin Cano explained that Beach 72 Dog Beach has generally been a success, which is why its high attendance has now become a concern due to the lack of spaces for pet recreation.
