Playa del Carmen, Quintana Roo — City officials are refuting a viral social media post that falsely claims the local government plans to impose a 35% municipal tax on rentals of houses, apartments, or rooms.
In a statement, the municipal government said Mayor Estefanía Mercado has made no such announcement and that no municipal provision establishes a monthly 35% charge on residential rents, as the post contends.
The anonymously circulated information attributes to the mayor statements about an alleged need to increase revenue to cover city expenses, without providing any official source, document, proposal, or verifiable statement to support the claims.
The government urged residents not to share false or unverified information and to consult official channels to confirm any official measures.
There is no municipal 35% tax on rentals of houses, apartments, or rooms in Playa del Carmen, officials said.
