Playa del Carmen, Mexico — The Municipal Secretariat of Civil Protection will seek in the coming months to impose stricter controls on propane gas companies that provide service to homes or businesses with tanks in poor condition.
This was announced by Darwin Covarrubias Góngora, the head of the department, who stated that gas companies must inform citizens of risks at their residences and should not provide gas service to homes with unsafe tanks in order to reduce risks in the city.
He explained that Playa del Carmen's environmental conditions, specifically the salt air, accelerate the deterioration of tanks, which increases the possibility of serious accidents even with low concentrations of gas.
The official called on citizens to conduct periodic inspections of their gas tanks and to request inspections from Civil Protection if they detect any anomalies.
He advanced that the regulation is expected to be updated shortly to stipulate that no company may supply tanks in homes or businesses if they do not meet safety requirements.
Furthermore, he indicated that there are four companies providing this service in the municipality, and that they will be sent an official notice prior to authorities conducting inspections of their units.
"The gas service is high-risk and must be regulated," Covarrubias Góngora stated. "It is not just about having a federal permit; when providing services in the municipality, they must comply with local regulations and submit their units for inspection," he concluded.
