Playa del Carmen Moves to Fully Regulate Mototaxi Service

Playa del Carmen, Quintana Roo — The nine mototaxi unions operating in Playa del Carmen will soon be subject to new citywide regulations, according to Nayeli Molina Rosado, director of Municipal Transportation.

In an interview Sunday, Molina said that on Monday officials will meet with the Quintana Roo Mobility Institute (Imoveqroo) and union leaders to finalize a detailed set of guidelines.

Once completed, the document will be presented to the Mobility Commission for review, then sent to the City Council for analysis and approval.

The new rules will specify which main avenues mototaxis must avoid, along with possible adjustments to routes and service zones. State-level requirements, such as standardized color schemes and other features to facilitate vehicle monitoring, will also be included.

An estimated 1,500 to 1,700 mototaxis currently operate in the municipality. Molina emphasized the importance of regulating the service to align with the state government’s new mobility system.

The municipal government is working with the state administration to quickly finalize agreements that would allow the Municipal Transportation Department to act as a supervisory and sanctioning body alongside traffic authorities.

“The goal is to sign agreements between the state and the municipality to grant us the authority to supervise,” Molina said.
