Playa del Carmen, Quintana Roo — Mayor Estefanía Mercado has inaugurated the first phase of a major renovation and repaving project on Avenue 10 North, a key thoroughfare in the city. The project required a 43.6 million peso investment from the Municipal Strengthening Fund (Fortamun) and will directly benefit approximately 60,000 residents, with an indirect impact on over 333,000 people.
During the inaugural tour, accompanied by Infrastructure and Public Works Secretary Dorys Ake Sierra, the mayor stated the project aims to improve mobility, road safety, and quality of life in the area. “Today we are delivering a project that responds to a real need of our people,” she said.
The work included a comprehensive rehabilitation of the roadway, with demolition and reconstruction of sidewalks and curbs, leveling of utility access points, drilling of absorption wells, and widening of the central median. The project also involved asphalt paving, construction of vehicle ramps and universal accessibility features, installation of public lighting along the bike lane, and placement of horizontal and vertical signage.
“This is how our Avenue 10 looks now. Wide and safe sidewalks, a two-way bike lane, modern lighting, and signage that we continue to refine,” Mayor Mercado said. “We are reclaiming our streets so they can be lived in, walked on, and enjoyed by the community. And stay tuned, because here on Avenue 10 we are preparing a surprise for all our families on Sundays.”
She noted that Avenue 10 North has been a key route for workers, students, business owners, and families for years. “That’s why it was essential to intervene and ensure it is in dignified, safe, and functional condition,” she added.
