Playa del Carmen, Quintana Roo, January 18, 2026 — Representing Mayor Estefanía Mercado, the Secretary General of the City Council, Luis Herrera Quiam, inaugurated the state roller skating selection event at the skating rink of the Poliforum in Playa del Carmen. The event gathered 70 child and youth athletes from different municipalities in Quintana Roo as part of the process to form the state team for the 2026 National Olympics.
During the opening ceremony, Luis Herrera welcomed the participating delegations and emphasized that sports are a fundamental tool for social transformation. He also highlighted that the rehabilitation and modernization of sports facilities reflect the commitment of the municipal government led by Estefanía Mercado to the children and youth of Playa del Carmen.
Athletes from the municipalities of Benito Juárez, Cozumel, Isla Mujeres, and Playa del Carmen gathered at the track of the Playa del Carmen Sports Unit, a venue showcasing the effort, discipline, and high competitive level of the participants. They were accompanied by coaches and families in a competition held in first-class facilities.
During the inauguration, Quintana Roo was recognized as a national powerhouse in roller skating, a discipline in which the state has established itself as national champion thanks to coordinated work between authorities, coaches, athletes, and parents.
At the event, the head of the Quintana Roo Sports Commission (Codeq), Jacobo Arzate, stated that Quintana Roo’s roller skating is the best in the country, an achievement that is not the result of isolated efforts but of permanent and coordinated work among athletes, coaches, authorities, and families.
He also reiterated the state government’s commitment to promoting sports as a way to form champions both on and off the track.
In this context, he emphasized that this competition was held at the recently rehabilitated skating rink, a facility that reflects the vision of sports promotion led by Mayor Estefanía Mercado and Governor Mara Lezama, consolidating dignified spaces for high performance and the reconstruction of the social fabric through sports.
Meanwhile, the president of the Mexican Federation of Roller Skating, Nicolás Santibáñez, acknowledged the quality of the Playa del Carmen skating rink, noting that it meets all technical conditions to host national and international events, demonstrating the vision of the municipal and state government to strengthen sports development at all levels.
Also present at the podium were the General Director of Sports in Playa del Carmen, Alberto López Castro, and the president of the Roller Skating Association of the State of Quintana Roo, Juan León Hernández.
With the holding of the state roller skating selection event, the Playa del Carmen government consolidates itself as a sports reference in Quintana Roo and reaffirms its commitment to continue promoting sports as a public policy that strengthens the social fabric and the integral development of children and youth.
