The Mayor of Playa del Carmen, Estefanía Mercado, recently visited the Women's Shelter in the Nicte Ha neighborhood. The purpose of her visit was to assess the condition of the facility and develop a plan for its immediate restoration. The shelter is a crucial resource for victims of violence in Playa del Carmen.
Mercado noted that previous administrations had severely neglected the maintenance of such vital spaces for women and their children. Accompanied by the Secretary of Infrastructure and Public Works, Dorys Aké Sierra, and the head of the Women's Institute, Bárbara Delgado, she expressed dismay at the state of the shelter. She described it as abandoned and neglected, and vowed that her administration would take action to restore these high-priority facilities.
Mercado emphasized that her administration, which is predominantly female, is committed to transformation. "We are going to recover this space because no woman should be helpless," she said. She has pledged to visit and restore other neglected areas such as Ciudad Juventud, the Riviera Maya Sports Unit, and now the Women's Shelter in Nicte Ha, for the benefit of the people of Playa del Carmen.
Bárbara Delgado stressed the importance of the Women's Shelter, especially for victims of severe violence who require medical, psychological, and legal support. She pointed out that the shelter is not only a safe haven but also a place where women and their children can receive critical services.
The planned rehabilitation and modernization of the shelter will allow it to serve an average of up to 50 women and their children who are victims of violence. Delgado added that, in addition to providing a safe refuge, the mayor has instructed her team to offer legal support and training workshops to women and children. This initiative aims to equip them with skills that can lead to economic independence.
Delgado concluded by praising Mayor Mercado’s awareness of women's needs and her understanding of the importance of providing a safe refuge for those suffering from violence.
