The municipal government of Playa del Carmen is facing national and international scrutiny due to conflicting statements about its involvement with the controversial Fyre Festival 2. On March 27, 2025, municipal officials publicly participated in a joint press conference with festival organizers at Club Martina Beach, highlighting their collaboration and commitment to ensuring safety in tourist areas during the festival.

The following day, the municipality’s official social media accounts (@gobplayadelcarmen and @ssc_playadelcarmen) posted messages welcoming the festival, including photos from the press conference and messages of institutional support. However, on April 2, both accounts issued new statements denying any knowledge or involvement with the festival, causing public confusion. Interestingly, the original welcome posts remain visible on their platforms.

In response, the organizers of Fyre Festival 2 released an official statement with supporting documentation, including official permits signed by various municipal departments, invitation letters from the Town Hall’s institutional emails, receipts for procedures and municipal rights fees amounting to hundreds of thousands of pesos, and photos from the press conference featuring local government officials.

The festival representatives have labeled the municipality’s statements as “fraudulent and harmful,” and announced potential legal action against the Town Hall of Playa del Carmen and its mayor, Estefanía Mercado. The festival’s statement claims, “Mayor Mercado and her team were not only aware of the event, but actively participated in its development. Now that they are facing public criticism, they pretend to disclaim all responsibility. This behavior is not only dishonest but also defamatory.”

This incident has sparked a debate about local authorities’ accountability and the need for greater transparency in administrative processes. Citizens and media outlets are questioning how a municipal government can issue permits, collect payments, participate in official events, and then deny any knowledge of these actions.

The festival organizers continue to share documents, images, and a detailed timeline of events on their official social media account (@fyrefestival). Speculation is rife about potential lawsuits for defamation, economic damages, and institutional negligence. It appears this controversy is far from resolved, and the Playa del Carmen government will need to provide a clear explanation to the public in the coming days.

The original Fyre Festival, held in 2017, was marketed as a luxury music festival set on a private island in the Bahamas. Promoted by celebrities and influencers, attendees were promised upscale accommodations, gourmet food, and performances by top artists. However, upon arrival, guests encountered inadequate disaster relief tents, poor food, and no musical acts, leading to the festival’s collapse and the arrest of organizer Billy McFarland on fraud charges. McFarland was later convicted of wire fraud and sentenced to six years in prison.

In recent developments, McFarland announced plans for Fyre Festival 2, initially proposing to host the event on Isla Mujeres, Mexico. However, local officials denied any knowledge or approval of such an event, leading to its relocation to Playa del Carmen. Despite McFarland’s assertions and documentation suggesting arrangements and permits are underway, local governments have publicly denied that any such event is planned or authorized in their jurisdictions.

The controversy surrounding Fyre Festival 2 has raised concerns about the legitimacy of the event and the accountability of local authorities. As the situation unfolds, both the festival organizers and municipal officials are under intense scrutiny to provide transparency and clarity to the public.
