Playa del Carmen, Mexico — The Government of Playa del Carmen, through the Institute for Women and in coordination with the Secretary of Citizen Security, conducted a training session titled "Gender Perspective: Prevention of Violence Against Women and Digital Violence," aimed at operational and administrative personnel and cadets of the Police Academy.
The objective of the session was to strengthen the comprehensive training of the police force through a series of informative and awareness-raising talks on violence against women, digital violence, and the Olimpia Law. These dialogue spaces aim to foster reflection, respect, and the application of a gender perspective in police duties and victim assistance.
The head of the Institute for Women, Idania Gamboa Medina, offered the welcoming remarks, highlighting the importance of consolidating an institutional culture that respects human rights, attends to victims with sensitivity, and contributes to the eradication of violence in all its forms.
Representing Mayor Estefanía Mercado, the Secretary of Economic Development and Investment Attraction, Antón Bojórquez Mackay, delivered the official message, underscoring that the municipal administration prioritizes professionalization actions that strengthen a police force that is approachable, humane, and properly trained to assist those facing situations of violence, including digital violence.
Among the special guests present were the director of the Institute for Youth, José Gabriel Pérez Álvarez, as well as Alinne Castillo, head of the Center for Women's Assistance (CAM), who attended representing the honorary president of DIF Playa del Carmen, Eduardo Asencio.
As part of the context underpinning this training, it was noted that, according to the National Survey on the Dynamics of Relationships in Households (ENDIREH 2021), 70.1 percent of women over the age of 15 in Mexico have faced some type of violence. In Quintana Roo, this figure rises to 73.4 percent, above the national average.
In the digital sphere, 21.7 percent of women who are internet users have been victims of online violence, manifested through harassment, threats, identity theft, or non-consensual dissemination of information.
The Government of Playa del Carmen reaffirms its commitment to strengthening a more professional, trained, and sensitive police force and to advancing towards a safer, more just, and violence-free city for all women.
