Playa del Carmen’s Tire Recycling Breakthrough

Playa del Carmen, Mexico — Playa del Carmen has achieved a groundbreaking agreement to eliminate used tires, solidifying its position as an environmental leader in Mexico. The municipality in Quintana Roo has partnered with companies Nómadas México and Geocycle México to implement a comprehensive waste management system for special-handling materials, including tires, glass, grease, and used oils.

A Critical Step in Environmental Management

The agreement marks a milestone in the region’s environmental efforts, addressing waste that, if improperly managed, can become significant sources of pollution. These materials pose risks to public health and accelerate urban environmental degradation.

Statistics reveal that Playa del Carmen generates over 1,000 tons of used tires per month—equivalent to 100,000 tires annually—from private vehicles, public transportation, and freight trucks. If not disposed of correctly, these tires can become breeding grounds for disease-carrying mosquitoes, such as those transmitting dengue and Zika. They also present fire hazards, releasing toxic smoke, and contribute to soil and water contamination.

Installation of Collection Centers

As part of the initiative, the municipal Public Services Secretariat will oversee the installation of collection centers where materials like tires, glass, and vegetable oil will be sorted. Specialized units will then transport and process the waste, ensuring safe and efficient handling with a daily capacity of up to 60 tons if needed.

Geocycle, a global leader in circular waste solutions, operates in 40 countries and serves over 10,000 clients. The company employs co-processing to transform non-recyclable waste into valuable resources, recovering energy content and recycling 100% of minerals.

Through this collaboration, Playa del Carmen aims to enhance urban aesthetics, safeguard public health, and establish Quintana Roo as the first state in Mexico to implement an innovative special-handling waste program.
