Playa del Carmen, Quintana Roo — Playa del Carmen Mayor Estefanía Mercado and the newly appointed Municipal Public Safety Secretary, Carlos Montesinos García, met with local business leaders to strengthen ties between law enforcement and the community. The business sector expressed unanimous support for Montesinos’ leadership, emphasizing the administration’s commitment to ensuring peace and security for residents.
A Proactive Approach to Public Safety
Mayor Mercado underscored that the appointment of Montesinos was not driven by a crisis but rather a strategic effort to enhance policing standards. “For the Playa del Carmen government, it is vital that the business sector maintains close communication with municipal police leadership,” she stated. “Not all changes stem from emergencies. On the contrary, Playa del Carmen maintains a positive balance in public safety. This shift aims to develop a more approachable, humane, and professional police force.”
Mercado reiterated that collaboration with the private sector would be instrumental in building a safer, more competitive municipality with opportunities for all.
A Clear Operational Vision
Carlos Montesinos García presented a detailed operational plan focused on community engagement and efficient surveillance, supported by intelligence and technology. “We are here to work seriously, with experience and results. We know what must be done, and we will do it,” he affirmed. “We will fight for Playa del Carmen’s security using all available resources, with full conviction, and in coordination with every sector of society.”
Business representatives from industries including hospitality, retail, dining, and tourism, as well as professional associations like the College of Engineers and the College of Architects, voiced strong backing for the new public safety leadership. They praised the municipal government’s openness to establishing direct and ongoing collaboration mechanisms.
Sector Leaders Voice Support
Manuel Barrero, President of the College of Architects, commended Mayor Mercado’s administration for fostering communication with the business community and making a significant change in public safety leadership. “It is encouraging to learn about Carlos Montesinos’ profile, which emphasizes closeness with the public,” he noted.
Wilberth Gutiérrez, National President of the Mexican Association of the Real Estate Industry, stated that the leadership transition reflects the municipal government’s long-term strategy, which will encourage investment and economic growth.
Adán Toledo, President of the Playa del Carmen National Chamber of Commerce, Services, and Tourism (Canaco Servytur), congratulated Montesinos on his new role and acknowledged Mayor Mercado’s efforts in public safety.
Offner Arjona, President of the Playa del Carmen Small Hotels Association, highlighted the effective security measures implemented in the tourist zone, where public perception remains “very positive.”
The meeting reinforced the administration’s commitment to a collaborative approach in safeguarding Playa del Carmen’s future.
