Playa del Carmen, Mexico — The 11th Tamal and Atole Fair 2026 drew large crowds to Plaza 28 de Julio over two days, celebrating traditional Mexican cuisine and boosting the local economy.
From the start, the public space saw high attendance as people sampled a wide variety of tamales and atoles from different regions of Mexico and enjoyed artistic and cultural programs for all ages. The strong turnout from residents and tourists highlighted interest in events that strengthen the municipality’s cultural identity.
Before the ribbon-cutting ceremony, Economic Development and Investment Attraction Secretary Antón Bojórquez said the fair aligns with the municipal government’s vision under Mayor Estefanía Mercado to consolidate traditions as cultural and economic assets. He noted the goal is to position Playa del Carmen as a meeting point for the country’s gastronomic expressions and create opportunities for local producers.
Bojórquez emphasized that the fair serves a dual purpose: preserving traditional culinary practices while stimulating the local economy. This edition features 60 registered establishments whose representatives sell their products and participate in a competition for the best tamal, with cash prizes for the top three winners.
During the first day, the plaza remained packed for hours, reflecting the interest of residents and visitors in celebrations that highlight Mexico’s cultural diversity. The event’s format allowed direct interaction between producers and consumers, strengthening local consumption and visibility for small food businesses.
As part of the program, organizers held the first stage of the culinary competition, selecting 10 finalists who will compete on Monday for the top three spots, judged on flavor, presentation, and adherence to traditional recipes.
The inauguration included Riviera Maya Chefs Association President Héctor Escobedo; Diego Morelos Ramírez, representing the Public Security Department; fair participant Yazmín León; and Markets Director Antonio Pérez.
