Cancún, Quintana Roo — A pedestrian was critically injured after being struck by a public transport vehicle operated by the Andrés Quintana Roo union late Sunday night. The victim, a 28-year-old carpenter from Chiapas identified only as Mariano, remains in grave condition at Hospital General Jesús Kumate Rodríguez following the collision on Avenida Tulum.

Details of the Incident

The accident occurred at the intersection of Avenida Tulum and Calle 38 in Supermanzana 89, an area known for heavy traffic and inadequate pedestrian infrastructure. Preliminary reports from the Municipal Transit Directorate’s Forensic Unit indicate that the driver, Gabriel Eduardo P. O., 33, was operating a Nissan NV350 (license plate A724TNV, fleet number 895 TTE) at excessive speed in the left lane, traveling southbound on the Tulum extension.

Witnesses stated the driver failed to brake or attempt evasive maneuvers before striking Mariano as he crossed the avenue from east to west. The impact threw the victim several meters, leaving him with severe injuries. Paramedics from Unit QR 22, led by Ana Paula López, responded to the scene and transported him to the hospital.

"This stretch is extremely dangerous. There’s no respect for pedestrian crossings, and the van drivers act as if there are no consequences," said a local resident who witnessed the incident. Avenida Tulum, particularly its southern extension, has seen frequent accidents attributed to reckless driving by public transport operators.

Gabriel Eduardo P. O. was detained at the scene by Quintana Roo police and remains in custody pending legal proceedings. The State Attorney General’s Office has opened an investigation into the incident, classifying it as vehicular injury with potential aggravating factors due to the victim’s critical condition.

No further updates on Mariano’s prognosis have been released. Authorities continue to review surveillance footage and witness statements to determine the full circumstances of the collision.
