Playa del Carmen, Mexico — Following the recent incident of a deer being struck by a vehicle in the condominium area of Playacar, Luis Herrera Quiam, Secretary General of the Municipal Government, announced that patrols will be conducted to identify and relocate any additional deer in the area.

Deer Receiving Veterinary Care

The injured deer is currently under veterinary care and is being safeguarded by the Federal Attorney for Environmental Protection (Profepa). Herrera Quiam stated that after authorities were alerted via the 911 emergency line, Profepa personnel responded immediately, alongside representatives from the Secretariat of Environment and Climate Change and the Secretariat of Public Safety.

While the exact number of deer in the area remains unconfirmed, videos circulating on social media suggest there may be up to three more deer present.

“The mayor has instructed us to carry out the necessary patrols to identify any additional deer and proceed with their relocation,” Herrera Quiam reiterated.

He clarified that while Profepa is responsible for handling these animals, municipal authorities are monitoring the situation to prevent further accidents involving wildlife.

Investigation into Unauthorized Land Clearing

Regarding the closure of a property in the Playacar Phase II hotel complex—where unauthorized deforestation may have displaced the deer—Herrera Quiam noted that officials are still determining the appropriate penalties for the developer. Authorities are reviewing the nature of the project and the irregularities found.
