Passenger Bus Engulfed in Flames on Playa del Carmen Highway; No Injuries Reported

Playa del Carmen, Quintana Roo — A passenger bus operated by Del Valle was completely destroyed by fire late Monday on the highway to Playa del Carmen, but no injuries were reported, authorities said.

Civil protection officials said the fire broke out around 10:30 p.m., triggering an immediate response from the Autopista del Mayab concessionaire.

When emergency personnel arrived, they found the bus stopped on the right shoulder of the road, fully engulfed in flames.

The driver, identified as Cristino Rodríguez Vargas, told authorities the bus was not carrying passengers at the time.

Firefighters used 15,000 liters of water in direct and intensive attack maneuvers to bring the fire under control. After extinguishing the flames, crews cooled the metal structure to prevent any rekindling or spread to nearby vegetation.

Operations at the scene concluded around 1 a.m. Tuesday. The area remained cordoned off and secured, awaiting a heavy-duty tow truck to remove the damaged vehicle.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation. Authorities have begun technical and mechanical inspections to determine what sparked the incident.
