Playa del Carmen, Mexico — A significant partial roof collapse in the area known as the Motor Lobby of the Barceló Riviera Maya hotel triggered alerts from Civil Protection authorities, although fortunately no injuries were reported.
The collapse occurred around 5:00 PM when a structure measuring approximately 15 by 40 meters gave way suddenly. According to initial reports, the area was undergoing maintenance work, but because it was Saturday afternoon, the workers had already concluded their work shift, which averted a tragedy.
Personnel from Civil Protection and the Fire Department arrived at the site to inspect the affected area, determine preliminary causes, and verify possible structural risks. Authorities cordoned off the area and notified hotel staff of the safety measures that must be implemented before work can resume.
Although the incident resulted in no casualties, it raises questions about maintenance and supervision conditions at one of the largest hotel chains in the Riviera Maya, where construction and remodeling are frequent due to high tourist demand.
Local authorities announced that a detailed technical evaluation will be maintained to determine if there were faults in the materials, errors in supervision, or deficiencies in workplace safety measures.
