Playa del Carmen, Quintana Roo — The Papantla Flyers, a traditional performance group based in Parque Fundadores, have renewed their request to relocate their ceremonial pole to a more central area of the park, citing safety risks and declining tourism revenue due to sargassum seaweed influx.

Safety Concerns Prompt Appeal

Isaac González González, the group’s representative, stated that the request was formally submitted to the Solidaridad City Council at the start of the current administration through the Indigenous Affairs Committee. He explained that their current location poses hazards, as intoxicated individuals often enter the flight zone, endangering both performers and spectators.

While González acknowledged increased police presence in the area has reduced incidents, he emphasized the need for a safer space to preserve their cultural practice.

Economic Impact of Sargassum

The group also highlighted the financial strain caused by the mass arrival of sargassum, which has driven away tourists and diminished the tips that sustain their performances. González noted that the decline in visitors has significantly affected their income.

The Papantla Flyers continue to advocate for a more suitable location to ensure the safety and viability of their centuries-old tradition.
