“Pandemic Neglect: Urgent Call to Boost Polio and Measles Vaccination”

The Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) representative in Mexico, José Moya Medina, has urged the Federal Government to bolster the polio and measles vaccination programs in response to the rising number of cases in South American countries.

Medina emphasized that the focus on the Covid-19 pandemic has led to a neglect of other diseases, underlining the importance of adhering to vaccine schedules, particularly for children. He warned that diseases like measles and polio, previously considered eradicated, are resurfacing as threats in various regional countries.

Medina also highlighted PAHO's presence in all countries within the region, with the primary objective of expanding the reach of vaccines. "We are operating at a federal level here, and our colleagues in Belize have reached this border point specifically to work on vaccination, which is a priority for PAHO," he explained.

Medina stressed that delays in vaccination pose a significant problem, and the aim is to increase coverage for vaccines like measles, especially in light of recent cases in Europe and other parts of the world. Tags: vaccine
