Playa del Carmen, Mexico — As the year concludes, it is estimated that over half a million people, including both locals and tourists, visited the main beaches of Playa del Carmen throughout 2025.

Irving Lili Madrigal, director of the Federal Maritime-Terrestrial Zone in this municipality, specified that this estimated figure could be much higher if one considers that there is no count of people visiting beaches that have not been certified.

“The last count, which we had in the middle of the year, showed about 250,000 people from users of the certified beaches, where we keep a count. But it must be remembered that Playa del Carmen is extensive. We do not have the capacity to count all beach users,” he stated.

The official emphasized that a surge in the number of people visiting the beaches is expected in the last week of the year.

In that sense, he highlighted that all beaches are now in good condition, following the last influx of red sargassum that was recorded in mid-November.

He pointed out that some parts of the coastal zone are eroded, but clarified that this is due to the recent “southern winds” that hit the region.

He noted that, for this holiday season, the Blue Flag certified beaches were reinforced with more staff, who were also trained in English, to assist foreign visitors.

Finally, Lili Madrigal announced that in 2026, Zofemat will work in coordination with the Municipal Tourism Secretariat to launch an advertising campaign for the municipality’s beaches.
