Cancún fines 100+ businesses for waste violations

Cancún, Quintana Roo — More than 100 businesses in Cancún have faced sanctions due to improper waste disposal practices, according to officials from the city’s Green Patrols. Authorities confirmed that many establishments are failing to adhere to designated waste collection schedules, exacerbating public health concerns in key areas of the city.

Enforcement and Violations

A total of 170 commercial establishments have been penalized by the Green Patrols for mismanaging waste, which has led to the emergence of unsanitary "hotspots" in Cancún. The enforcement efforts target businesses ranging from small shops to large commercial chains, all of which are required by regulation to properly sort and dispose of waste.

Commander Baltazar, who oversees the initiative, stated, "We have observed that businesses are not maintaining order in waste collection schedules. Many are also using areas typically designated for residents to dump waste outside permitted hours, creating hygiene issues. Patrols and operations have been intensified to restore balance between businesses and the community."

He further explained that waste handling must align with the nature of the waste producer’s activities. Businesses exceeding limits are obligated to follow strict schedules and categorize waste by type to facilitate recycling. To date, 170 businesses have been cited for non-compliance.

Civic Penalties and Illegal Dumping

In addition to commercial violations, 98 individuals have been referred to civic judges for environmental infractions. Judges determine penalties, which may include fines or community service. Authorities urge residents to respect designated waste disposal zones and schedules, warning that violators risk detention under the law.

The Green Patrols also recently uncovered an illegal open-air dump in the Tres Reyes irregular settlement, where individuals were charged for waste disposal. Inspections revealed the site lacked permits from any level of government, leading to its permanent closure.

The ongoing crackdown underscores Cancún’s efforts to enforce environmental regulations and mitigate public health risks tied to improper waste management.
