Colosio neighborhood, Playa Del Carmen — A trash fire that got out of control burned a flimsy structure in the Colosio neighborhood on Thursday, sending up a thick column of smoke visible from surrounding areas. No injuries were reported, though the property owner suffered a nervous breakdown upon seeing the damage.
Preliminary reports indicate the homeowner ignited a pile of accumulated trash on her property at the intersection of 35th Street and Colosio Avenue before leaving to run errands. The flames quickly spread to a nearby palapa—a thatched-roof structure built with flimsy materials—which caught fire almost instantly.
Neighbors spotted the intense blaze and called 911. Firefighters, civil protection personnel, and municipal police officers responded, cordoning off the area and working to extinguish the flames. They brought the fire under control after several minutes.
When the homeowner returned and saw the emergency response and damage to her property, she experienced a nervous crisis. Emergency personnel treated her on scene, and she stabilized without needing hospital transport.
Authorities cleared the area once they confirmed no further risks to residents.
