Playa del Carmen, Mexico — A tanker truck carrying automotive oil waste crashed off a highway between Puerto Morelos and Playa del Carmen on Tuesday afternoon after the driver reportedly lost control due to a mechanical failure.
The accident occurred around 4 p.m. on the Puerto Morelos-Playa del Carmen highway. Motorists traveling on the same federal highway reported the crash through the 911 emergency system, prompting a response from the National Guard, firefighters, and private paramedics.
According to initial reports, the driver for the company Siresa was transporting the oil waste from Cancún toward the Riviera Maya when the vehicle experienced a mechanical issue. The driver lost control of the heavy truck, veered off the roadway, managed to re-enter the highway briefly, and ultimately came to rest in a green area.
The truck’s airbags deployed upon impact, protecting the driver from serious injury. Paramedics provided first aid at the scene and determined the driver did not require hospital transport.
National Guard highway division personnel arrived at the site, took charge of the incident, and coordinated recovery efforts. A specialized tow truck was brought in to remove the heavy vehicle from the brush. Authorities said the tanker would remain secured by federal officials pending a determination of responsibility.
No other vehicles were involved in the incident, and no third-party damages were reported. The National Guard will handle the investigation into the crash.
