Mérida, Yucatán — Authorities in Yucatán are investigating the poisoning of nine mixed-breed dogs in central Mérida, an incident that has caused alarm and fear among residents for the safety of their pets. The State Attorney General's Office of Yucatán (FGE) has opened an investigation into the case, which has generated indignation and concern among the local population.
According to initial reports, the incident occurred on Friday night at approximately 11:00 p.m. at a residence located on Calle 77 between 40th and 42nd streets in central Mérida. The property owner reported finding his nine rescued dogs dead on the terrace of his house, all with foam around their muzzles, a sign of possible deliberate poisoning.
One neighbor stated that during the night he heard the animals barking insistently but did not imagine the tragedy that was unfolding.
Following the discovery, the owner notified the 911 emergency number. Officers from the State Investigative Police (PEI) and personnel from the FGE arrived at the site to collect the bodies and transport them for autopsies to confirm the cause of death.
The news has generated alarm and fear among neighbors, who now fear for the safety of their pets, especially those who usually leave them on terraces or in patios overnight. Residents indicated that several nearby homes have security cameras and will review the footage to provide evidence that could help identify those responsible.
The community is demanding justice and animal protection measures, noting that this case adds to other recent incidents of cruelty against animals registered in Yucatán.
