Cancún, Quintana Roo — Construction of the Nichupté Vehicular Bridge has entered its final phase with the installation of the last six support beams over the lagoon, officials announced.
The Ministry of Infrastructure, Communications and Transportation (SICT) reported that workers have installed 1,658 beams throughout the project, completing 100% of the support structure. The lagoon area was considered one of the most complex sections for engineers working on the major infrastructure project.
The final beams were installed in sections 176-177 and 177-178, according to the ministry.
“This progress represents the completion of one of the most complex construction stages and places us in the final stretch to transform mobility in Cancún,” the SICT stated in a brief announcement. “We continue working with firm steps and technical rigor to deliver a work of international quality for the benefit of all Quintana Roo residents.”
Governor Mara Lezama recently stated that the bridge’s inauguration, originally scheduled for last December, has been postponed to March or April.
According to official data, the 11.2-kilometer project will feature three lanes (one in each direction plus a reversible lane), a bicycle path, pedestrian walkways, emergency bays, and a modern lighting system. Construction is being handled by the company Ingenieros Civiles Asociados (ICA).
The Nichupté Bridge project was announced in early 2022 when construction began as a priority federal government project under then-President Andrés Manuel López Obrador. Throughout 2024 and 2025, tentative inauguration dates were announced, including one for December of last year.
