Playa del Carmen, Mexico — A tragedy occurred on Wednesday afternoon in the Luis Donaldo Colosio neighborhood of Playa del Carmen following the death of a baby girl, just a few months old, inside a rooming house located on Avenida 45 and Calle 94.
According to the official report, around twelve noon, the infant's parents woke up and noticed the girl was not breathing, prompting them to request support via the 911 emergency number. Paramedics from the Red Cross arrived at the location and attempted to resuscitate her; however, they confirmed the infant no longer showed any vital signs.
Initially, the parents stated that the death may have occurred because the father, while sleeping, had accidentally fallen on top of the baby. Nevertheless, during a preliminary examination of the body, forensic experts from the State Attorney General's Office detected secretions that could indicate a case of bronchial aspiration related to respiratory complications. Therefore, it has not been ruled out that the cause is linked to a pre-existing illness.
Personnel from the Secretariat of Citizen Security arrived at the site and secured the area while ministerial agents collected testimonies. The body was removed by personnel from a funeral home and transferred to the Forensic Medical Service, where a legally required autopsy will be performed to confirm the cause of death.
Unofficially, neighbors indicated that the parents had consumed alcoholic beverages during the night, losing consciousness and crushing the infant. Furthermore, they stated it was not the first occasion that the DIF System (Integrated Family Development System) had intervened due to neglect of their children. This allegation, however, must be corroborated during the course of the ministerial investigations.
The case has generated consternation among neighbors in the Colosio neighborhood, who expressed their concern and hope that the authorities clarify what happened in order to determine responsibility.
