Chetumal, Mexico — Sergio Crisanto Mortero, the newly elected president of the Unión Local de Productores de Caña de Azúcar (ULPCA), has firmly denied any involvement in the ongoing investigation into the murder of his predecessor, Evaristo Gómez Díaz, and two of his bodyguards. The killings occurred on May 12 in the rural community of Sacxán.
Dispute Over Leadership Dismissed as Motive
When questioned about recent statements from Quintana Roo State Attorney General Raciel López Salazar—who suggested that a power struggle within the ULPCA could be a motive for the crime—Mortero asserted that he is not part of the investigation.
“The murder of my predecessor and the discovery of the bodies in Sacxán clearly show that insecurity has worsened in the rural areas of Othón P. Blanco,” Mortero stated. He emphasized that the rising violence along the Ribera del Río Hondo is a pressing issue he has repeatedly brought to authorities’ attention.
Calls for Justice
Mortero acknowledged the efforts of the State Attorney General’s Office, stating that prosecutors are working diligently to solve the case and ensure the crime does not go unpunished.
The investigation continues as authorities seek to determine the full circumstances behind the triple homicide.
