Cancún, Quintana Roo — The Catholic Church is preparing for the installation of Salvador González Morales as the new bishop of the Cancún-Chetumal Diocese, with a ceremony scheduled for February 27 expected to draw approximately 2,700 people.
Gustavo Rodríguez Vega, the apostolic administrator, said the episcopal transition represents a significant moment for the region’s Catholic community following the death of former bishop Pedro Pablo Elizondo Cárdenas. He noted the succession process has proceeded smoothly, ensuring pastoral continuity.
Mauro Noriega, the vicar of Pastoral, outlined the day’s three main events. A welcome ceremony will begin at 9:00 a.m. at the Sagrada Familia parish, with both ecclesiastical and civil authorities in attendance.
At 10:00 a.m., a procession will move to the Cancún-Chetumal Cathedral for the profession of faith and oath of fidelity. The installation Mass is scheduled for noon at the Cancún Convention Center, where doors will open at 10:30 a.m. to accommodate attendees.
Organizers will implement a wristband system distributed through parishes and deaneries, with separate access points for parishioners, special guests, clergy, and media. The event is expected to draw bishops, priests, representatives from all levels of government, business leaders, benefactors, and pastoral workers from both local and outside communities.
Church officials urged attendees to arrive early and follow logistical instructions to ensure an orderly and punctual ceremony.
