Mexico City — The Ministry of National Defense (SEDENA) has announced a series of modifications to the National Military Service program, with adjustments set to take effect starting in 2026. The federal agency disseminated the information through its official social media channels, detailing the new training process for obtaining the military service card.
A Streamlined Training Model
Under the current system, young men in the eligible class, those who are reluctant to enroll, and female volunteers who are selected—specifically those who draw a white or blue ball in the annual lottery—must complete 44 Saturday sessions. These sessions run from 8:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. as part of the General Training Program.
The updated model will significantly reduce this period. Beginning in 2026, the training will consist of only 13 Saturday sessions, equivalent to three months of activities, divided into two phases throughout the year:
- First stage: from February 14 to May 9, 2026.
- Second stage: from August 1 to October 24, 2026.
Registration and Enlistment Procedures
SEDENA has called on interested young people to register during the weekends of January, directly at the military installation closest to their home.
During the enlistment phase, Mexicans must go to Municipal Boards and Recruitment Offices to fulfill the corresponding requirements. The annual lottery determines the manner in which each registrant will fulfill their Military Service:
- Those drafted: individuals who draw a white or blue ball and must attend Army, Air Force, or Navy training centers.
- Those on standby: individuals who draw a black ball and do not perform in-person service.
To facilitate the process, military personnel will set up reception stations at each Municipal Board and Recruitment Mayor's Office. These stations will be available from 8:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., where young people will submit their identity card and other required documents.
Training and Certification
During the training phase, recruits receive basic military instruction at units designated as National Military Service Training Centers. There, they are taught fundamental knowledge of military doctrine, discipline, drill and ceremony, and civil protection activities.
Under the new system, a certificate will be awarded upon completion of each stage, confirming the training period has been fulfilled. The official release of the military service card will occur in December, as is customary.
According to the announcement, these changes aim to streamline the process, reduce the time commitment, and make it easier for more young people to fulfill their military obligations without affecting their academic or work activities.
