Cancún, Quintana Roo — National Guard officers seized approximately five kilograms of ketamine hydrochloride found in an abandoned suitcase at Cancún International Airport, in the municipality of Benito Juárez.
The discovery was made Sunday during routine inspection and surveillance work at the terminal. According to the Security Cabinet and initial federal reports, the suitcase arrived on a flight from the United States and was left unclaimed.
After spotting the suitcase apparently abandoned, federal agents inspected it and found several packages containing the chemical substance.
Ketamine is primarily used in medical and veterinary settings, but it is also used illegally for its effects on the central nervous system. Possession and transport without proper legal authorization is a crime.
The suitcase and its contents were turned over to the Federal Prosecutor’s Office (FGR), which opened an investigation and ordered forensic tests to confirm the substance’s exact nature and origin, determine how it entered the country, and identify those responsible for transporting and abandoning it at the airport.
Authorities said no arrests have been made so far. The seizure is the latest blow to drug trafficking at one of the main gateways to the Mexican Caribbean.
