Cozumel, Mexico — The Museum of the Island hosted the inauguration of the natural art photographic exhibition “Born from the Soil (Nés de la Terre)” by Franco-international artist Fred Martin. The exhibition invites the public to experience a sensitive journey where the human being appears symbolically born from the earth.
Fred Martin, born in France with an artistic career developed in different parts of the world, stated that this exhibition is a compilation of 25 years of work, resulting from his travels through various countries and cultures. His work is expressed through photography, performance, drawing, and sculpture, using materials that nature offers him in an organic and respectful manner.
The artist has traveled through multiple regions creating ephemeral sculptural installations, in a constant search to discover the impact of time and nature on his creations. Due to the large dimensions of his sculptures, the exhibition brings together photographic images of the works created, as well as drawings and sketches, allowing appreciation of his creative process.
All the presented pieces are made with organic materials from the places where he works, such as stones, woods, branches, bamboo, and other natural elements, always from a deep awareness of respect for the surrounding environment.
During the inaugural event, the director of the Museum of the Island, Isela Carrillo, welcomed attendees on behalf of the general director of the Cozumel Parks and Museums Foundation (FPMC), Juanita Alonso Marrufo, and thanked the participation of local and foreign artists, who—she said—enrich the cultural offerings with new and diverse artistic expressions.
She noted that the museum is an open space for creativity, where exhibitions not only invite visitors to see the works but can also become a source of inspiration for new generations of artists.
In this context, it was highlighted that, aligned with the New Agreement for the Well-being and Development of Quintana Roo, promoted by Governor Mara Lezama Espinosa, the FPMC promotes art as a factor for building peace, community cohesion, and social reflection, and in this particular case, as a means to raise awareness about environmental care and a respectful relationship with nature.
As part of the protocol, councilor Franco González Alcérreca presented a recognition to artist Fred Martin, while Alejandro Queb Franco performed the inaugural declaration of the exhibition.
After the tour of the exhibition, the public witnessed a striking performative action led by Fred Martin himself, accompanied by the sound of the didgeridoo and with the support of museographer Satoko Kitamura and artist Daniela Jáuregui. During the performance, the artist’s semi-naked body, lying on a white blanket, was covered with mud; subsequently, the resulting silhouette was transferred to another cloth, which was exhibited in the museum hall as part of the work.
The experience captured the full attention of attendees, consolidating “Born from the Soil” as an exhibition that transcends the visual and proposes a deep dialogue between art, body, time, and nature.
