Mural Unveiled in Playa del Carmen for Femicide Victim Mariel García

A mural honoring Mariel García, a femicide victim, unveiled outside the Center for Justice for Women in Playa del Carmen, Quintana Roo.

Playa del Carmen, Quintana Roo — A mural honoring Mariel García, a young woman killed in a 2024 femicide, was unveiled outside the Center for Justice for Women here, where her mother and members of the collective “Siempre Unidas” demanded the capture of two suspects who remain at large.

During the ceremony, Rosa López said the artwork aims to keep her daughter’s case visible and remind the public of the violence she suffered. García was murdered by a group of five men, only three of whom have been detained so far.

López noted that two of those sentenced received the maximum penalty, while the other suspects continue to evade justice.

“I will not stop demanding action until everyone involved is arrested and prosecuted,” García’s mother said. She added that the mural also seeks to raise awareness among women passing through the area about the severity of this crime.

According to the case timeline, García’s disappearance was reported in late January 2024. Her remains were found in March of that year in a jungle area of the irregular settlement Los Sauces in Puerto Aventuras.

Investigators determined her last known communication occurred on January 27. The following day, she left her workplace dressed in black, made a purchase from a street vendor, and headed toward the highway, where her trail went cold.

Three people have been arrested in connection with the femicide, including José de Jesús “N,” identified as the alleged mastermind.

García was originally from Veracruz and moved to Playa del Carmen in 2022 with her partner. In October 2023, she began working at the civil association “El Sauce Solidaridad.”

The mural was created by artist Florencia Gigena and is located near the intersection of Avenida 115 and Calle 38 Norte, a visible spot facing the Center for Justice for Women.

After the unveiling, López reiterated she will continue legal and protest actions until the two remaining suspects are captured.
